Toyota Introduces Apple Carplay®, Android Auto™ on Select Vehicles

Owners of select Toyota vehicles will be able to enjoy the convenience and functionality of Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ with Toyota Australia’s roll out of the smartphone mirroring technology now underway.

Over the course of the past month, Toyota has upgraded its multimedia systems for Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility in new model Prius, Corolla hatch, Camry, and the all-new Granvia launched in October.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing, Sean Hanley said the availability of Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ will offer customers the ability to access a number of apps on their mobile devices in a safe and convenient way.

“By offering Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility in our vehicles, we are continuing to refine our market offerings and provide our customers with the products and services that enhance their lives,” Mr Hanley said.

“The technology will allow our customers to stay informed, entertained and in touch with the wider world from behind the wheel, directly through the vehicles’ upgraded multimedia systems,” he said.

Existing owners of the all-new HiAce and RAV4 models will be able to upgrade their multimedia systems with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ free of charge from 1 November.

Owners of latest generation Camry, Corolla hatch, and recently upgraded Prius will also be able to upgrade their multimedia system with the new technology at their local Toyota dealership for $199 from 1 November as well.

Toyota’s upgraded multimedia system with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ will also be standard on the all-new Corolla sedan and upgraded C-HR that are due on sale in Australia before the end of the year.

Our Toyota Vehicles Have Full Warranty, Tropicalised, Says Globe Motors

Globe Motors Holdings (Nigeria) Limited has said it is an accredited and authorised distributor of Toyota vehicles in Nigeria.

This is a swift reaction to a publication by Toyota Nigeria Limited (TNL) that it had severed distribution links with Globe Motors, which stated that it never had that type of relationship with TNL in the first instance to warrant a breakup.

A statement yesterday by the Managing Director of GMHNL, Mr. Victor Oguamalam said, “Our attention has been drawn to a false publication by a moribund acronym regarding Toyota vehicles distributorship in Nigeria,” stating that the company had direct links to a source known to Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan from where it imports vehicles.

He explained that Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) is the number one manufacturing company in the world and that it has five layers of distributorship for their products- Toyota vehicles and spare parts- covering all continents of the world.

He said all these distributors ensure that TMC’s standards are met and factory warranty of 3 years is ensured. “Globe Motors is successfully linked to this value chain.”

Oguamalam said, “Globe Motors Company is the foremost, leading and biggest importer of Toyota vehicles in the country. Our warrantees are more valid than those of any other subset or moribund acronym in the country.”

Kia Reveals First Image of new Small SUV

Kia Motors has revealed the first image of its new small SUV. Due to be revealed fully in the summer, the new vehicle possesses the space and capabilities of a traditional SUV in a compact package.


With a modern and urbane design, inspired by the 2019 Kia SP Signature Concept, the SUV will stand apart from rivals by matching the unique preferences and needs of the millennial generation. The robust design character of a traditional SUV coexists with sophisticated exterior design details, such as its long hood, a strong, sophisticated character line on the front bumper, and sharp lines pressed into the bodywork. Its strong shoulder line, matched with a glasshouse which tapers towards the rear of the car, as well as rear bumper with a metallic muffler effect, lends the compact SUV an air of understated sportiness.


The new compact SUV brings a sense of luxury to its exterior design with LED headlamps which extend over the radiator grille. The lamps feature a three-dimensional light graphic and a highly technical diamond pattern at their trailing edges. The design is also echoed in the rear LED lamps.

Toyota Receives Top Ratings as New Corolla and Rav4 Excel in Safety Testing

The new Toyota Corolla and Rav4 have both secured a top five-star rating in Euro Ncap’s Independent Safety Testing Programme. The cars performed strongly across the board in the protection given to adult and child occupants and to “vulnerable road users,” such as pedestrians and cyclists, as well as the effectiveness of the Toyota safety sense active safety systems (applicable to rav4 vx models locally).


The crash test results also demonstrate the ‘designed-in’ strength of the Toyota new global architecture platforms on which the models are built, helping maintain the integrity of the cabin in the event of a collision. The robust structures, both for the Corolla Hatchback and Rav4 Suv, are reinforced in critical areas and make strategic use of high-strength steels to absorb and channel impact forces away from the cabin.


The second generation Toyota safety sense package includes a pre-collision system which can detect pedestrians in the vehicle’s path in both day and night-time driving, and can also recognise cyclists by day. The system scored maximum Points in Euro Ncap’s testing at low, city speeds, with collisions being avoided at all test speeds. At highway speeds, collisions were avoided when approaching a slower vehicle; when coming up behind a stationary or slowing car, impacts were avoided in most cases, and mitigated in others.


The system’s pedestrian and cyclist recognition function also performed well, with collisions being avoided in all tests, in day and night conditions.
Other Toyota safety sense features include adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert with steering control, automatic high beam and road sign assist.

Lexus Sends A V8 into Space

Lexus is launching a test drive with a difference to celebrate the starring role of its new RC F high performance coupe in Sony Entertainment’s new alien blockbuster Men In Black™: International.
The luxury lifestyle brand will transmit the sound of the RC F’s V8 engine deep into space.


Through an exclusive partnership with Swinburne University of Technology’s Centre for Astrophysics, Lexus has encoded the intoxicating engine sound of the naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 into an audio waveform that will be transmitted with the open invitation: “New Lexus RC F. Earth. We’ve been expecting you.”


The transmission was sent from the largest radio telescope in the southern hemisphere on Friday 17th May, 7:45pm AEST at the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (UTMOST) – located on the outskirts of Canberra, ACT.
The radio telescope facility, owned and operated by The University of Sydney, is used to listen to the galaxy, but was modified to allow the innovative message to be beamed directly towards Orion’s Belt – a callback to the original Men In Black™ film.


The crafting of the intergalactic invitation has been led by Professor Matthew Bailes with help from Swinburne’s astrophysics team and the on-campus supercomputer, OzStar.
“We’re experts at listening to and decoding the naturally occurring radio transmissions from neutron stars but Lexus wanted us to invert that process,” said Professor Bailes.


“We had to find a solution that was both technically feasible, adhered to radio transmission regulations and didn’t blow up our telescope. In a few thousand years we’ll find out if anyone has heard it.”

Jaguar I-PACE Wins Three Titles at International Engine + Powertrain of the Year Awards 2019

The all-electric Jaguar I-PACE has won Best Electric Powertrain, Best New Engine, and the 350 to 450PS category at The International Engine + Powertrain of the Year Awards.

Announced at the Engine Expo + The Powertrain Technology Show in Stuttgart, the panel of 70 expert motoring journalists from 31 countries took into account key characteristics including performance, driveability, energy efficiency and refinement.

These three titles recognise the technical excellence of the I-PACE’s zero emissions powertrain, which was designed and developed in-house. 

Ian Hoban, Powertrain Director, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “We’ve used all the benefits of state-of-the-art battery and motor technology to create a world-class electric vehicle. As well as zero emissions, the all-electric powertrain delivers an ideal balance of performance, refinement and range, together with outstanding responsiveness, agility and day-to-day usability. I-PACE is a true driver’s car, and above all a true Jaguar. We set out to make the world’s best all-electric performance SUV: these awards reflect that, and are fitting recognition for what the engineering team has achieved.”

I-PACE’s 90kWh lithium-ion battery enables a range of up to 470km (WLTP). It’s capable of charging from 0-80% in a maximum 72 minutes using a 60kW DC charger, or 0-100% in around 12 hours when using a 7kW AC wallbox – ideal for overnight charging at home.

A suite of smart, range-optimising technologies includes a battery pre-conditioning system: when plugged in the I-PACE will automatically raise (or lower) the temperature of its battery to maximise range ahead of driving away. A heat pump can scavenge energy from the outside air – even in sub-zero conditions – to reduce the amount of battery energy used by the climate control system. It can even utilise heat generated by the propulsion system to warm up the cabin, further reducing demand on the battery.

The battery is placed centrally between the two axles, and as low down as possible. This location enables perfect 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity: together with the advanced double wishbone front and Integral Link rear suspension this is fundamental to the I-PACE’s agile handling and outstanding ride comfort.

The permanent magnet motors are hollow, with the driveshafts passing through the centre. As well as being light – together with the transmission they weigh just 78kg – they’re also exceptionally compact. This contributes to the I-PACE’s spacious cabin, 656-litre luggage compartment volume and SUV ground clearance.

Integrating the motors into the front and rear axles delivers all-wheel drive for outstanding traction and control in all conditions. They also enable high levels of regenerative braking – up to 0.4G. This maximises range, and also enables intuitive ‘single pedal’ driving in many conditions.

I-PACE has received 66 global awards since it was revealed little more than a year ago, including 2019 World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, World Green Car, European Car of the Year, and German, Norwegian and UK Car of the Year.

The Mercedes-Benz EQC: Electric Intelligence

The new Mercedes-Benz EQC (combined power consumption: 20.8 – 19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)[1] is the first Mercedes-Benz under the product and technology brand EQ, the automaker has said.

At the press driving presentation in Oslo, the European “capital of e-mobility”, the EQC is dynamically demonstrating its all-round qualities for the first time. It systematically embodies the principle of “human-centred innovation”, and makes e-mobility simple, reliable and convenient for the customer. The EQC combines the know-how from more than 130 years of automobile engineering with the mobility requirements of the future, and stands for Electric Intelligence, the automaker said in a statement.

“The Mercedes-Benz EQC is not just a vehicle with electric drive, it combines hallmark attributes of the brand such as quality, safety and comfort. Its progressive design, unique driving comfort and an operating range absolutely suitable for day-to-day needs emphasise that the EQC is the Mercedes among electric vehicles. This is also shown by its services – from optimised navigation to charging management. It all comes under the heading “Electric Intelligence” – a mobility package that goes well beyond the vehicle itself,” says Britta Seeger, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales.

Optimum planning before a journey

Individual services relating to e-mobility have been around for a while. The EQC takes a new, comprehensive approach: the intelligent networking of services and functions considerably simplifies use of the vehicle. With its intelligently coordinated drive system, battery management, charging management, recuperation strategies, digital services and the infotainment system MBUX, the EQC is a new departure in e-mobility.

The experience already begins before the journey. EQC drivers can plan their destinations from the home or office, enter a departure time and bring the interior to the desired temperature. They receive an intelligently planned route including necessary charging stops and an arrival time. On request they can receive a push notification when the charging process starts and ends. This creates transparency and helps drivers to plan upcoming journeys to best effect. Programming is possible directly via MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience or via the Mercedes me App.

Intelligent navigation – more than just from A to B

The vehicle’s electric intelligence is also shown in for the EQC optimised navigation. It uses numerous factors to plan a route automatically – including loading stops if necessary. It takes into account e.g. the current charge status of the battery, the weather, the topography and traffic flow, and available charging stations. The route calculation is always based on a fast and convenient route with few charging stops and short charging times – therefore quick-charging stations are given preference.

Customers do not necessarily have to charge the vehicle fully, but can charge it to suit the total journey time. The route planning also responds dynamically to changes. It can take place both offboard and onboard, i.e. externally (via the Mercedes me App) and within the vehicle. The journey can therefore be conveniently planned at home before departure, or while already en route if required. The voice control specific to the Mercedes-Benz EQC makes operating the EQC easier – thanks to natural language recognition.

It is activated by the key words “Hey Mercedes“. This is because the LINGUATRONIC of MBUX recognises and understands many questions and commands relating to electric car specific control aspects. A few examples: “Show me the energy flow”, “What charging settings have been made?”, “Charge the vehicle to 85 percent” or “Where is the nearest charging station?”.

Via Mercedes me Charge the customer receives access to the world’s largest charging net with over 300,000 charging points and over different operators of public charging stations in Europe alone (municipalities, carparks, motorways, shopping centres, etc.). Thanks to EQC-optimised navigation, Mercedes-Benz customers can find these stations easily and can gain convenient access to the charging stations via the Mercedes me Charge card, the Mercedes me App or directly from the car.

No separate contracts are necessary for this: apart from authentification, customers benefit from an integrated payment function with simple billing. The customer chooses the preferred payment method only once. Every charging procedure is debited automatically. The individual charging processes are clearly listed in a monthly invoice.

Mercedes me Charge also allows access to the quick-charging stations of the pan-European network IONITY. Especially over long distances, the short charging times make for a pleasant journey. By 2020 IONITY will construct and operate around 400 quick-charging stations along the main traffic arteries in Europe. IONITY was founded in November 2017 as a joint venture by BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen group with Audi and Porsche.

Tailor-made drive system for efficiency and dynamics

To exploit the advantages of locally emission-free electric drive to the full, the developers of the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle under the new product and technology brand EQ decided on a completely newly developed drive system with intelligent control. Both the electric powertrains (eATS) and the battery were tailor-made for the Mercedes-Benz EQC. Tractive power is provided by an asynchronous motor at each axle. The asynchronous motors generate an output of 300 kW and a maximum combined torque of 760 Nm. The electric motor, a fixed-ratio transmission with a differential, the cooling system and the power electronics form a highly integrated, very compact unit.

The compact electric powertrains (eATS) at the front and rear axles give the EQC the driving characteristics of an all-wheel drive. Intelligent control allows dynamic torque distribution between the two driven axles over a wide operating range, creating the conditions for high driving dynamics. Torque shifting allows the torque to be distributed dynamically between the front and rear axles, ensuring that there is always a satisfying balance between power and efficiency.

To reduce power consumption and increase dynamism, the electric drivetrains are configured differently: the front electric motor is configured for best possible efficiency in the low to medium load range, while the rear one determines dynamism.

The battery: powerful energy pack from in-house

The centrepiece of the Mercedes-Benz EQC is the lithium-ion battery arranged in the vehicle floor. With an energy content of 80 kWh (NEDC)[2], it employs a sophisticated operating strategy to supply the vehicle with power, enabling an electric range of 445 – 471 km (NEDC)2.

The latest-generation lithium-ion battery consists of 384 cells and is located in the vehicle floor, between the two axles. The battery system is modular in design, consisting of two modules with 48 cells each and four with 72 cells each. The powerful high-voltage battery has a maximum voltage of 405 V and a nominal capacity of 230 Ah.

The entire battery system is liquid-cooled. At low temperatures a battery heater ensures outstanding performance and efficiency, especially while charging. The battery is an integral part of the crash concept for the vehicle as a whole. Its low, central location also has a positive effect on the handling characteristics of the EQC. The battery is produced in Germany, by the wholly-owned Daimler subsidiary Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE in Kamenz/Saxony.

FRSC Deploys 36,000 Personnel for Eid El Fitr Special Patrol

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced 2019 Eid el fitr special patrol with deployment of 36,000 of its personnel.

A statement by FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem this was in line with its tradition of organising special patrols during festive periods to avert road obstructions, crashes and deaths due to heightened traffic movement.


According to him, the special patrol was to put necessary measures in place to ensure that the 2019 Eid el fitr celebration expected to take place early next week is observed under an atmosphere of peace, safety and free movement of people and vehicles across the country. Kazeem further stated that the special operation was to ensure free flow of traffic, provide prompt rescue services and timely clearance of obstructions on all major roads and critical corridors across the country during and after the festive period as well as minimising the occurrence of road traffic crashes on the nation’s highways.


According to him, the special patrol was to put necessary measures in place to ensure that the 2019 Eid el fitr celebration expected to take place early next week is observed under an atmosphere of peace, safety and free movement of people and vehicles across the country. Kazeem further stated that the special operation was to ensure free flow of traffic, provide prompt rescue services and timely clearance of obstructions on all major roads and critical corridors across the country during and after the festive period as well as minimising the occurrence of road traffic crashes on the nation’s highways.


He added that the focus would be on light sign violation, overloading violation, driver licence violation, fake/expired; lane indiscipline, removal of rickety vehicles on the roads and other obstructions as well as driving with expired/worn out tyre and without spare tyre.


To ensure the effectiveness of the operations, 52 critical corridors across the country have been identified to be covered within the period, while commanding officers operating along such corridors were given specific directives to ensure that the routes are properly manned. As part of the strategies, mobile courts would also be in full sitting to promptly try traffic violations.


The FRSC spokesman enjoined all motorists to cooperate with the personnel of the Corps and other security agencies who would be engaged in traffic management to ensure free movement of traffic.


The special operation, which began yesterday, will end on June 8 with active participation of regular and special marshals, while monitors from the FRSC National Headquarters Abuja would be deployed to Field Commands to ensure compliance to the operational order. The Corps Marshal of FRSC of the FRSC, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi is the overall Commander of the special patrol.
