Spied testing earlier this year by photographers, the two-door version of the E-Class sedan will compete with the BMW 6 Series and will also preview the E-Class convertible that will likely debut soon after the coupe. The new E-Class coupe will reportedly be the first model to sport a more conservative design language that is bring introduced by Mercedes-Benz’s head of design, Gorden Wagener.

The all-new E-Class sedan was introduced earlier this year at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, and the German automaker will show off the high-performance E63 and E63 S models at the upcoming 2016 L.A. Auto Show.

Expect the new E-Class coupe to feature design elements found on the S-Class coupe as well as the new C-Class coupe. “We’re progressing the design of our production cars to a new phase,” said Wagener. “It still adheres to the basic principles evident in more recent models, but it is much cleaner and more timeless in appeal.”

Like the new sedan, the coupe will ride on the automaker’s latest modular rear architecture (MRA), that also underpins the C-Class and S-Class models. Under the hood it will likely share the same powerplants, although the company has yet to confirm an E63 Coupe is in the works.
